Personal Tax Return Questionnaire tax planning services., Work Related Deductions useful tools.
We would appreciate you takin New Client Form.g the time to complete the following details. If you have any questions concerning the form, please do not hesitate to ask for assistance.
Personal Details
For claiming work-related deductions, the ATO provides two distinct methods. Understanding which one applies to your situation can make a meaningful difference to your return.
Option 1, ATO Fixed Rate Per Hour
Use the ATO's rate per hour for home office or study expenses. Under this method, you are not able to claim separately for the use of your mobile telephone, internet, stationery costs, or computer consumables. The fixed rate is intended to cover those costs within a single calculation.
Option 2, Actual Costs Method
Claim the actual costs of your study or home office use. In addition to the direct study expenses, you can also claim the use of your mobile telephone, internet, stationery costs, and computer consumables. This method requires more detailed records but often yields a higher deduction for those with significant work-from-home or study expenses.
What You Will Need to Complete This Questionnaire
Before you begin, it helps to have the following information on hand. The more accurate your records, the more precisely we can calculate your entitlements.
- Your employment income summaries or payment summaries from all employers
- Receipts or records for any work-related purchases made during the financial year
- A log or estimate of hours worked from home, if applicable
- Mobile and internet bills, if you intend to claim under Option 2
- Details of any study or self-education expenses, including course fees and textbooks
- Records of any tools, equipment, or uniforms purchased for work
- Vehicle logbook or odometer records if you use your car for work purposes
Why Accurate Records Matter
The ATO places the responsibility on taxpayers to substantiate their claims. A deduction without supporting documentation can be disallowed during a review or audit, which may result in additional tax and penalties. Keeping receipts, invoices, and logs throughout the year is far simpler than reconstructing them after the fact.
Our team at GFM Accountants reviews each questionnaire carefully. We will identify the most appropriate method for your circumstances and ensure your return is lodged accurately and on time. If something in your records is unclear, we will contact you before finalising anything.
Common Work-Related Deductions
Work-related deductions vary considerably depending on your occupation and working arrangements. Some of the most frequently claimed categories include:
- Home office expenses (under either Option 1 or Option 2 above)
- Self-education and professional development costs directly related to your current role
- Protective clothing, uniforms, and occupation-specific attire
- Tools and equipment used in performing your duties
- Work-related travel, including public transport and vehicle use
- Union fees and professional association memberships
- Subscriptions to industry publications or professional journals
A deduction is only valid if the expense was incurred in earning your income, you were not reimbursed by your employer, and you can substantiate the claim with records. If you are unsure whether a particular expense qualifies, note it in the questionnaire and we will advise you.
Self-Education Expenses
If you are studying to maintain or improve skills required in your current employment, those costs may be deductible. This includes course fees, textbooks, stationery, and in some cases a portion of your internet and phone costs (under Option 2). Study undertaken to obtain a new qualification or move into a different field is generally not deductible, even if the new role is in a related industry.
The distinction matters, and it is one of the areas where professional advice adds real value. We will assess your study expenses in the context of your current role and advise accordingly.
